As of today, the EU’s MiCA transition period is over. Any crypto exchange without a full license can no longer onboard new users or offer key services to EU residents. Only around 210 of the 1,200+ firms that used to operate under national registrations made the cut.
Binance is the highest-profile casualty. It withdrew its license application in Greece days before an expected rejection and is now suspending new sign-ups, deposits, and several products for EU users. It’s not alone. MEXC has told EU users to withdraw funds. Bitget, KuCoin, Gate.io, and HTX don’t appear on the EU’s official license register either.
Binance says funds remain safe and withdrawable. Maybe…but here’s what’s worth thinking over: your access to your own money just became dependent on a company’s ability to satisfy a regulator, in a country you might not live in, using rules you didn’t write.
That’s not a hypothetical risk anymore. It’s what happened this week.
This is Custodial Risk
When your crypto sits on an exchange, you don’t hold it. The exchange does. Your balance is a number on their ledger, backed by a promise. Most of the time, that promise holds. Right up until a licensing decision, a liquidity crunch, or a regulator’s phone call changes the terms without asking you first.
Self-custody removes that dependency entirely. No license to lose, no regulator to satisfy on your behalf, and no email telling you what you can and can’t do with your own funds.
Ryder One Was Built For This Moment
Ryder One is a fully air-gapped hardware wallet with an EAL6+ secure element, the same tamper-resistance standard used in banking infrastructure. No cables, no Bluetooth, no Wi-Fi. Every transaction is confirmed on-device, in your hands, not on a company’s server.
Recovery isn’t a single point of failure either. TapSafe Recovery spreads protection across Recovery Tags, Recovery Contacts, and Phone Backup, so losing one path doesn’t mean losing your funds. Your seed phrase still works too, exactly as it always has.

Self-custody isn’t a reaction to bad news. It’s the thing that makes this kind of news irrelevant to you.
